Background on the World

The world revolves around Light and Darkness. First, there are the churches of Light and Darkness. Light is associated with protection and healing, while Darkness is associated with the destruction of enemies.

Indeed, even the world on which they live is equally light and dark. During the day on the light side, it is bright and good. At night, the sun trees give off the light they have stored during the day, staving off the darkness. On the dark side, the nights are truly black. Even during the day, the twisted void trees spew out their darkness, almost negating any view of the sun.

Connecting both sides are two areas between the great seas. First are the Sands of Demise, a great desert that covers the “bottom” of the world. Constant sandstorms and dangerous creatures make crossing through this area nigh impossible, even during what isn’t considered the “stormy” season. On the other side, there are the Endless Plains. Many monsters come from the dark side to the light side here, so the border is constantly patrolled by Paladins and other members of the church. During the summer season on the light side, great tornados make passage almost impossible as well, but the rest of the year it is reasonably passable, although few would.

Along with light and dark, there are some associated elements of a more traditional manner.

Aligned with light are air (electricity) and fire.

Aligned with dark are earth and water.

People have varying levels of elemental affinity, and each element comes with its own expected personality, and stereotypes.

Best disease healing (status effects), long ranged shocking spells

Fire:

Passionate, warm (friendly), easily angered, arrogant

Revivification, burning, warmth

Water:
Personality:
Calm, schemers
Magic:
Ice/cold, drowning, recovery from blood loss

Earth:
Personality:
Steadfast, lazy, (full of “inertia” and stubborn)
Magic:
Diseases, poison, hurling rocks

Darkness:
Personality:
Perceptive, expect lies (discerning), hides things, pessimistic, thieves
Magic:
Curses, life draining.
